Classroom Connection Reflection:

I plan to use digital storytelling as a central information source that is broadcast through the local media center at my school. Student will be informed on a wide range of topics that are directly involving the general curriculum. Various formats can be use to broadcast completed video productions such as DVD or direct connection of a PC. Video links can also be made available.

The students will investigate and understand that materials can be reused, recycled, and conserved.
Key Concepts include:
•use of materials and objects over and over again
•everyday materials that can be recycled
•conservation of water and energy at home and school

Student Project Plan:

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Objective: Students will be able to identify items that can be reduced, reused, and recycled.
Grade: 4
Subject: Science

GOALS:

1 Creativity and innovation
2 Communication and collaboration
3 Research and information fluency
4 Critical thinking, problem-solving, & decision-making
5 Digital citizenship
6 Technology operations and concepts

Procedures:
Creating video using Window Movie Maker emphasizing things that can be reduced, reused and recycled; completing a sort of these items; discussing what happens with the garbage; discussing how we can take care of our environment

Schedule of lessons:

•The class will review items that can be reduced, reused and recycled. The students will complete a sort by determining whether objects belong in the reduce, reuse or recycle category.
•The class will play a game to review. The teacher will name an item and the students will show the reduce, reuse or recycle card to identify the category it would fall in.
•the students will gather pictures of something they can reduce..reuse...or recycle. After the picture has been created, they will narrate (“I can reduce…”).
•Combining the students’ images, students will each have a digital story created using Windows Movie Maker, showing what they can reduce, reuse and recycle.

Standards:
ANALYZING THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF MEDIA
TECHNOLOGY IN THE ARTS AND SOCIETY
1. Identify positive and negative impacts of the arts on current society.
2. Identify key factors that have impacted the evolution of the arts, communications, and
Audio-video technologies.
3. Identify key local and national issues for arts and communications technologies.
4. Predict future trends related to media technology.

Materials:

•Microphone for recording narration
•Access to the computer lab for creating our digital story
•Large paper and markers for tree map
•reduce, reuse, recycle sorting worksheet

Assessment(s):

•Students will be assessed through their contributions to the digital story as to whether they were able to identify objects that can be reduced, reused and recycled.
•Students may need assistance to distinguish between these terms, to type their information or to remember what they were going to say when narrating their work.
•Students who can or want to can create more than one slide for each category.
